Winter Concert 2010
Sunday, January 31, 2010, 4:00 p.m.
Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, NY

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Psalm 42
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Requiem

Our Winter Concert will include the music of Mendelssohn and Mozart. The concert will open with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Der 42. Psalm Wie der Hirsch schreit for ochestra, chorus, soprano soloist, and 2 tenor and 2 bass soloists. We will be performing the entire work. Mendelssohn composed this beautiful, lyrical setting of this psalm in 1839. His music reflects the dominant Romantic style of his day tempered by the strong influence of J. S. Bach (1685-1750), a composer that Mendelssohn re-discovered for his era. The musical setting of the psalm brings an enriching musical and spiritual experience to our chorus and our audience. The Winter Concert will conclude with a complete performance of W. A. Mozart's Requiem, composed for chorus, orchestra, and soprano, alto, tenor, and bass soloists. Mozart wrote this setting of the Requiem Mass in the last months of his life in 1791, and the urgency in this music reflects the composer's struggle to complete this work before his death. The beauty, drama, and spirituality of the Requiem brings a deep appreciation of Mozart's music to both performers and audience members; it is truly a timeless work of art.

Opera Choruses

The second major concert of the Mineola Choral Society's 2009-2010 season will take place in May at Mineola High School. The program will highlight music from operas. The concert will begin with G. Verdi's Stabat Mater. This piece epitomizes the late dramatic operatic style of Verdi, in this case applied to a sacred text. The piece is for chorus and orchestra. The concert will continue with two famous choruses from Verdi operas; The Chorus of Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco and the Brindisi from La Traviata for soprano soloist, orchestra and chorus. The chorale and procession for chorus and orchestra from Richard Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger will follow. The concert will continue with two excerpts from Bizet's Carmen; Michela's aria for soprano, and March of the Toreadors for chorus, bass soloist, children's choir, and orchestra. The concert will conclude with excerpts from the long-running musical, Les Misérables. This concert will bring a variety of music to our audience with three great 19th century operatic composers and a popular opera of our day.
